Departure
And so you leave me, with no little word
Of tenderness or hope for your return!
What is my failure that I did not earn
Your loyal faith? And wherein have I erred
In thought or deed since, rapturous, I heard
our voice, consenting? Shall I never learn
What wrong I have committed that you spurn
My passionate pleadings with a heart unstirred?
What promised care or trust have I denied
Since first you came? I have been true, I swear,
To all the vows I made. I cast my pride
Into the dust and, in my deep despair,
I beg you on my suppliant figure look;
For where shall I secure another cook?
