Humors Of Law
We laugh at old Wouter Van Twiller,
Whose mode of deciding a case
Was to go by the looks
and the weight of the books
Which lawyers brought into his place.
We jest at his manner of judging
Because it is queer in our eyes,
And the erudite way of our jurists today
Shows up as decidedly wise.
For now they determine on Justice
By means that are noble to see,
By a comma misplaced in a proofreader's haste
Or a failure at crossing a "t".
And having thus climbed to perfection,
To Justice sans error or flaw,
Our laughter rings shriller at Wouter Van Twiller
And his way of deciding the law.
